Random Event

The 1st and 3rd round the DM should roll for events before strategies. These events only last one round. These events can vary wildly based on environment, time of day, weather etc. Events might not do anything, give one side advantage, or create entirely new strategies.

Here are some examples.

Night

1

Sudden bright light. Things get lit on fire, people turning on lanterns to see the commotion, stepping on bioluminescent plants etc.

Nocturnal hunters. Wolves, giant owls or worse are in the area.

Stand and deliver! Another random crime is happening in the area, you stumble on a group of camping bandits or are otherwise harassed by a third party of humanoids.

Urban

1

Social gathering. A large quantity of people are gathered or are gathering for some special event or celebration.

Unusual vendors. Your chase brings you into an unusual marketplace, like a wet market, a pet store or a bomb salesman.

Do not enter. Your chase brings you into a destroyed building, a junkyard or some other area sectioned off due to hazards.

Mage Training. A magical demonstration is happening, creating a hazardous or annoying spell in the area like roiling magma, darkness or grease.

Everybody look. Your chase causes a commotion worthy of attention, causing people to open their doors and windows in your path.

Wilderness

Herd Animals. A group of animals occupies the area such as cattle, bison or lions.

Dense vegetation. Bamboo shoots, thorny bushes or tall grass impair movement.

Body of water. Your chase brings you alongside a river, lake or waterfall.

Fairies. Capricious fey interfere in the chase

Weather

1

Rain. It picks up very quickly and starts raining hard.

Fog. A small fog cloud obscures sight in this area.

Snow. A layer of snow coats this particular area.

Unusual/Rare Stuff

1

Natural disaster. Lightning strikes, flash flood or earthquakes.

Dragon attack. A dragon fitting of the local environment flies overhead.

Portal. You stumble upon a portal leading to another dimension.
